The Château de Pesteil:
A Journey to the Heart of History and Legends
Perched on the heights of the Alagnon valley, the Château de Pesteil, a listed historical monument built in sandstone, is a silent witness to the medieval past of the region. With its imposing facades and its architecture dating from the thirteenth century, it is one of the most fascinating and essential remains of the Middle Ages in Auvergne. Surrounded by mysteries, legends and treasures, this fortified castle has seen the passing of lords, battles and intrigues, leaving an indelible mark on local history. The Château de Pesteil invites visitors to discover not only its tumultuous past, but also the wild beauty of the region, in a setting where history, nature, hidden treasures, medieval cobblestones, the ramparts, the villages of France with half-timbered houses and the picturesque villages meet harmoniously.
Classified as a historic monument, the Château de Pesteil stands proudly at 750 meters above sea level, overlooking the Cère valley. Former fortress of Polminhac, it embodies all the majesty and power of the Middle Ages, with its imposing keep, true symbol of the defense of this rocky citadel of the Cantal. Inside, magnificent 15th century frescoes decorate the walls, while 17th century painted ceilings enrich the main body of the castle.
The ensemble is beautifully decorated with tapestries, paintings, furniture and treasures, testifying to the elegance of past eras. Enlarged and restored in the 19th century, the castle has belonged since 1608 to the family of Cassagne de Beaufort de Miramon Pesteils, who still reside there today. A unique exhibition of 20 wax figures illustrates seven centuries of daily life in Pesteil, offering visitors a fascinating immersion into the history of this architectural jewel, its buildings, its hidden treasures, its medieval cobblestones, its ramparts and typical hamlets.
