In the heart of the quiet village of Murols, nestled in the green landscapes of the Carladez aveyronnais, the old communal forge stands as a discreet yet essential witness to rural memory. For nearly two centuries, its walls echoed with the sound of hammer striking anvil, preserving the craftsmanship of a lineage of seven generations of blacksmiths. This trade, at the crossroads of necessity and artisanal skill, left a lasting mark on village life by shaping both farming tools and everyday objects.

Closed in the 1970s, the forge could easily have fallen into oblivion. But thanks to the will to preserve traces of the past, the municipality and a group of passionate locals took on the mission of safeguarding and showcasing this emblematic site. Carefully restored, it is now open by reservation, for a symbolic €1 visit, during which visitors can discover the gestures, tools, and world of the blacksmith of old — notably through a pedagogical video retracing the trade’s key techniques.

Far more than a simple relic of the past, the forge of Murols is now part of a creative and collective dynamic, integrated into the “De Feu et de Vent” Imaginary Trail. This artistic and nature-filled path invites visitors on a meaningful exploration of local heritage, where rural history meets contemporary expression through metal sculptures crafted from repurposed materials.

A building that bears witness to the past

The old forge, now transformed into a museum, is a fine example of built heritage preservation. Its simple architecture, typical of rural constructions in Rouergue, has been carefully preserved. The original materials, such as stone and wood, reflect local craftsmanship and give the place an authentic atmosphere, worthy of the most beautiful medieval towns.

Spread over three levels of about 45 m² each, the museum offers a smooth and progressive stroll. Each floor has been arranged to recreate the atmosphere of the represented trades, with original objects, period tools, and an evocative scenography, transforming every corner into a treasure to discover.

The restoration of the building was not only aimed at aesthetics: it brought back to life a central place in the village’s daily life. The forge was not just a workshop, but a place of exchange, service, and transmission, much like what the museum offers today to visitors passing through or during a touristic stroll in the history-rich streets of Belcastel.

The Trades of the Forge

The blacksmith then uses the hammer, anvil and various tools to shape, bend, cut or even weld the metal according to the intended use. On the path of the imaginary "Of Fire and Wind"

The museum is part of a unique discovery journey: the imaginary trail "Fire and Wind", a family experience of 2.5 km from the church square. This path, marked with small iron dragons, leads visitors through woods and meadows to the blacksmith’s workshop, in an atmosphere both calm, picturesque and enchanting.

All along the trail, old farm machinery has been transformed into poetic and unusual sculptures: the famous Blaise the dragon, a metal phoenix, or an amazing iron throne, a nod to the fantastic universe. These works, designed by the inhabitants themselves, give life to the heritage in a playful and unexpected form, able to amaze children and their parents.

Every summer, between 16 July and 13 August, commented walks are offered, guided by Albert, one of the creators of the course. These visits end with the exceptional opening of the forge, in a friendly and warm atmosphere. A great opportunity to discover the ancient gestures of the blacksmith’s trade, illustrated by an educational video and vintage objects.

Located only about 30 minutes by car (around 25 km) from the Laussac peninsula, the Belcastel Museum is an ideal stop to enrich your stay at Camping Sunêlia La Source.
